Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Collab and Rise

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

Michael Jordan

As a washed-up former athlete, I know as well as anyone the importance of teamwork.

Sure, there’s typically a person who is “the best on the team”–which I never was on any of my teams but I was a heck of a role player. And it’s the role players that help the team achieve their ultimate goal.

Obviously, teamwork doesn’t only apply to sports. So let’s talk about how it can apply to business (and pretty much everything else).

Teamwork: The Gateway to the Highest Levels of Success

Think of any successful business—Apple, Google, or even a small local bakery. What do they have in common? Behind their success are teams of people working together toward a common goal.

The truth is, no one wins alone. You might have a clear vision for your business, but you’ll need a mix of skills, perspectives, and talents to bring that vision to life.

Teamwork brings out the best in everyone because it means no one person has to be the best at everything.

Having a solid team is a great way to progress for many reasons, but here are a few:

  • Problems are solved faster because there are multiple minds tackling the same issue.

  • Productivity skyrockets because tasks are dished out according to each team member’s strengths.

  • Morale and chemistry stays high because people feel a sense of camaraderie and unity.

Bottom line? Success becomes not just possible, but sustainable (and, dare I say, inevitable?).

Brainstorming with Others: The Fast Lane to Progress

Ever hit a wall when working on an idea? It’s one of the worst things ever.

Do you know how many years I stared at blank screens before I even started writing this newsletter? A really stupid amount of years.

Entrepreneurs (and all people) often find themselves stuck in their own heads, unable to see the bigger picture and get their wheels turning. This is where brainstorming with a team–or even one other person can be a huge deal.

Here’s why:

  • Fresh Perspectives: Someone else might look at your problem and see a solution you didn’t think of.

  • Combining Ideas: A team can take your initial concept and build on it, creating something even better.

  • Motivation Boost: Discussing ideas with others is energizing and can reignite your passion for the project.

There are a bunch of examples of successful businesses pivoting (PIVOT!!) a bunch of times before they land on the right version of their idea. AirBnb is a good one to read up on.

The next time you feel stuck, call a meeting (or your friend or dad or whoever you can bounce ideas off of), grab a whiteboard, and let the ideas flow. You’ll be surprised how effective this exercise can be.

Choosing the Right Team: The Foundation of Collaboration

Let’s be real—teamwork is only effective if you have the right people on the team to begin with. Try winning a soccer game with only strikers and no one who can play defense.

It might be interesting to watch but the end result will probably be ugly. It’s the same in business.

Here’s a few tips on how to choose a team that fuels success:

  • Shared Vision: Your team needs to believe in your mission and be just as committed (this is key) to achieving it.

  • Diverse Skill Sets: Look for people who fill in your gaps. In other words, they’re good at what you aren’t. If you’re great at big-picture planning but struggle with details, hire someone who thrives on structure and organization.

  • Positive Attitude: A team member who approaches challenges with a can-do attitude can inspire others and keep morale high.

  • Strong Communication: Collaboration thrives on clear, open communication. Choose people who can express their ideas and listen to others.

Take your time with choosing your team. Bringing the wrong people on board can slow your progress, but the right people will help take your business to the moon.

Wrapping It All Up: Why Teamwork Matters

To sum it all up, teamwork is the ultimate business superpower:

  • It allows you to achieve levels of success you can’t reach on your own.

  • Brainstorming promotes progress, brings fresh ideas to the table, and can get you out of a rut when you’re stuck.

  • Choosing the right team is the foundation of long-term success (See the New England Patriots, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Kansas City Chiefs, San Antonio Spurs…they’ve all been called dynasties for a reason).

If you’re building or leading a business (or anything at all), remember this–no one wins alone. Surround yourself with the right people and watch your business (and life) thrive.
